Professional Exchange
Program 2006, Mansoura,
Egypt

Last summer I spent 5 weeks
(August/September) on the
exchange in Egypt. I was in the
city Mansoura on the department
of paediatrics. There were 3 of
us from Serbia and the others
were from Romania, Bulgaria,
Czech Republic, Canada... We
were lodged in a very
comfortable professors'
reseidence. The food was
excellent, and we had 3 meals
every day. The Egyptian
colleagues speak English quite
well, because they study in that
language.
Our practise lasted 4 hours per
day. The doctors in the hospital
were very kind and they wanted
to show us everything. Sometimes
we took part in some seminars
and we discussed various topics
with them. Egypt is very
beautiful and interesting. We
visited many cities around the
country with the host
organisation MSSA and met many
people from every corner of the
planet. The people from MSSA
took care of us and helped us
whenever we had questions or
dilemmas. They were with us
every night, so we couldn't get
bored at all: nargillah,
coucheri, o'mali, falafel, kofta
(I hope I spelled correctly
J).... The Egyptians do all
their stuff during the night,
because it's too hot for
anything during the day. The
stores are open on weekends, but
closed on Fridays. Another
interesting thing were bargains
with the street sellers, and it
seems to be their lifestyle,
unlike in my country.
I had an impression that one day
lasted like a whole week,
because we were always so busy
and all the new things I learnt
and did, made me feel I was
there much longer. The most
peculiar thing for me was that
they did not have any
pedesterian passage over the
street with no traffic lights.
Sometimes it was a real
adventure to cross to the other
side of the street. In spite of
that, they seem to understand
each other in the traffic
without any problem.
I will always remember National
Museum in Cairo, where I heard
so many languages in one place
at the same time. It was such a
wonderful feeling! I also
celebrated my birthday in
Mansoura and it was the most
exciting birthday in my life. I
have to thank my new friends for
that wonderful surprise!

Professional Exchange Program, Montreal –
Canada, august 2006
I spent four weeks in the professional
exchange program at the department of
gastroenterology at Hotel Dieu Hospital in
Montreal. I was supposed to be in hospital
every day ( weekends excluded) between 9 am
and 5 pm with one break for the lunch at
about 1 pm. I was the only student in the
exchange program at that time in that
particular Hospital. |

At the beginning, it was very hard to get
used to new environment. The hardest part
was to understand French with Quebec accent.
I had so many responsibilities in the
hospital compared to the ones at my home
University. The most important part of the
program was special emphasis on the history
taking and physical examination.
There were daily rounds with the attending
staff to review, newcoming consultations and
patient follow-up in the Emergency Room and
the out-patient department. It was expected
any of my patients undergo invasive
procedures (gastroscopi, colonoscopi…) at
any time. I was present at the
administration and interpretation of these
procedures. The presentation of the cases
and the organization of the patients’
records, physical exams, and laboratory
findings were considered an important part
of the program.
I was strongly encouraged to follow “my”
patients through the various procedures.
Although the tasks were demanding, this
approach was discouraged by the Residets.
And at the end it was so interesting working
in that hospital with all these ultra modern
equipment.
Something about my so-called social life in
Canada... Canada is the best choice for
somebody who wants to improve own clinical
skills and knowledge and for the ones who
like to spend holiday working. The social
life is not so well organized actually, it
was not organized at all. But I had such
great room-mates (three girls from
Montreal). They were very talkative,
friendly and willing to help me settle down
in the new environment. I met other students
on the exchange from Italy and Mexico, I met
also many students from Canada. They were
all great.
Nightlife in Montreal is
excellent. There are so many restaurants,
dance clubs, pubs so you could not get
bored. If I had another opportunity I would
choose Canada again. If you like nature
Montreal suburb is fascinating. I tried
rafting; rowing, canoes and other very
interesting activates which were
unforgettable.
